Discover Foodies Diner

The first time I pulled into the tiny lot at 582 Huyler St, South Hackensack, NJ 07606, I wasn’t expecting much more than a quick bite before heading back to work. Instead, I ended up spending nearly an hour chatting with the waitress about how the owners developed their griddle technique to get that golden, never-greasy finish on their breakfast potatoes. That’s how my relationship with Foodies Diner started, and it’s why I now recommend it to friends who think all New Jersey diners feel the same.

Over the past few years, I’ve reviewed dozens of local spots for community food blogs, and this place consistently earns top marks from both regulars and newcomers. One mechanic I interviewed across the street told me he comes here three times a week because the portions stay steady even as food prices climb. That tracks with national data from the National Restaurant Association showing that nearly 60% of customers are willing to switch diners when portion sizes shrink, so consistency really matters.

What makes the menu stand out isn’t flashy fusion or trendy plating. It’s the careful execution of classics. Watching the short-order cook during a busy Saturday rush feels like seeing a well-rehearsed play. Eggs are cracked one-handed, omelets folded with a smooth wrist motion, and burgers flipped just once to lock in juices. I once timed the kitchen during peak hours and the average ticket came out in under eight minutes, which is impressive for a place that still cooks to order rather than pre-batching.

A real example that sold me happened during a late winter snowstorm when half the area shut down. They were still open, serving truck drivers and hospital staff from Hackensack University Medical Center. One nurse told me she relies on their turkey club after double shifts because it’s filling without being heavy. That kind of community trust doesn’t come from marketing-it comes from showing up every day.

Nutrition is another quiet strength here. While diners aren’t known for healthy eating, Foodies offers whole-grain toast, grilled chicken wraps, and lighter breakfast bowls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults who eat at least one balanced meal away from home per week report better overall diet quality, and it’s nice to see a neighborhood spot leaning into that without losing its soul.

The reviews on local platforms echo my experience. People consistently mention friendly service, clean booths, and fair prices, which lines up with standards set by organizations like the New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association for customer satisfaction. Still, I’ll admit I haven’t tried every single item on the menu, especially some of the seasonal dinner specials, so there may be hidden gems I’ve yet to discover.

Locations matter too. Being right off the highway makes this diner a convenient pit stop for commuters heading between Bergen County and Hudson County, yet it still feels like a hometown hangout. Families from nearby streets, warehouse workers on lunch break, and weekend cyclists all share counter space, creating that lively mix you can’t fake.

One small detail I appreciate is how they handle feedback. Last summer I suggested adding a vegetarian hash, and two months later it appeared as a chalkboard special. That kind of response process-listening, testing, and then rolling out-mirrors what restaurant consultants like Danny Meyer often highlight as a key driver of long-term success.

So when someone asks me where to grab a reliable meal in South Hackensack, I don’t hesitate. This diner isn’t trying to reinvent comfort food. It just respects the craft, the customers, and the community, and in a world of chain restaurants and shrinking menus, that’s something worth talking about.

  • While meandering around our local neighborhood, my husband and I stumbled upon this tiny diner and gave it a try. We're so glad we did, because this hole in the wall turned out to be a diamond in the rough. With a nondescript exterior and limited signage, Foodies Diner is easy to miss. It's in an area with mainly houses and mixed use commercial buildings, but the space inside is cozy. I especially appreciated the way the owner greeted everyone who enters and thanked everyone who leaves with notable warmth and small-town friendliness. The menu reads like a true diner - with all-day breakfast and brunch options, as well as standard lunch fare. We ordered a Santa Fe salad and an L.A. burger - which comes with avocado, bacon, onion, lettuce, and tomatoes. The burger was pretty standard, but having it delivered on a warm brioche bun feels a little bit special. The accompanying fries were also great - crisp and potatoey on the inside. The salad, on the other hand, was a near triumph. Served on a large platter, there was a small field of well-seasoned chicken, shredded cheddar, vegetables, avocado, pico de gallo, and - best yet - some pieces of warm, toasted pita. I even sprinkled some pieces of bacon from my burger into this salad, and wow did that take it over the top. I dug into this salad with fair gusto and would absolutely come back for it...which is saying something, since I wouldn't expect to fall in love with a salad at a diner. Service was fantastic, and we were pleased with how reasonably priced our meal turned out to be. There's plenty of parking - either right out front or in the lot further back.

  • Loved the atmosphere and the service! Went for brunch on Saturday and it was great. Definitely want to go back and try the other dishes! Peanut butter & jelly shake: loved this!! A nice balance between the peanut butter and the fruit flavor! Buffalo chicken omelette: overall a solid omelette, nice kick with the Buffalo sauce, the bleu cheese chunks were pretty intense Short stack of pancakes: these seemed a bit heavy to me Red velvet waffle: the batter was also pretty heavy on these, but I did love that even though there were red velvet cake pieces IN the waffle, it wasn’t overly sweet. If the batter is lighter in the future I’ll definitely order it again! Grilled cheese & waffle fries: waffle fries were very crispy and on point! And the grilled cheese was perfect. Brought me back to being a kid

  • From the time we walked in the door, to the time we left it was a friendly and welcoming vibe. Now on to the food, I never once thought of putting buffalo chicken into an omelette, but they did.. and let me tell you, it’s a MUST try! The chicken was still crispy even mixed into eggs, and it was just hands down one of the best omelettes I’ve had! Let me start with this by saying, I literally add a side of bacon to every single meal that I’m able to. With that being said, it was a generous portion of crispy, flavorful bacon. My wife got the pancakes and sausage links, the sausage links were also perfectly crispy/crunchy on the outside and juicy/moist on the inside. We aren’t typically in the area much, but now whenever we are, we’ll be eating here! Plenty of options to choose from, next I’ll be intrigued to try something off the lunch menu. Highly recommend giving Foodies a try when in the area, it will not disappoint!!

  • Fantastic, spectacular. Food was fresh, tasty and made w| so much love. Our waitress gave us her Gold Standard Service and super attentive as a waitress should. Gave us a complimentary french toast bite which was also very good. I had a good experience, very comfortable seating. I will definitely return when I'm around the area.

  • This diner feels like home the second you walk in. The atmosphere is cozy, inviting, and full of that classic “small town comfort” vibe. The staff treats you like family — attentive, friendly, and genuinely happy to make sure you’re taken care of. The service is fantastic: quick without feeling rushed, and everyone goes above and beyond to make your meal perfect. The food tastes just like a home-cooked meal, hearty and full of flavor. You can tell there’s real care behind everything they serve. If you’re looking for a place where you can relax, enjoy great food, and feel completely welcomed, this is the spot. Absolutely deserves all 5 stars!

  • Great service. Such a home feel. And the food suits the name of the place. Can't wait to visit NJ and go back to the home vibes of foodies.
